This adaptation of the popular Per Petterson novel of the same name is a story that alternates between 1943, 1948, 1956 and 1999. Trond, a sixty-seven-year-old man, takes himself off to a cabin to spend a quiet Christmas. This plan fails when he stumbles upon his neighbour, a living reminder of a time that profoundly marked Trond’s life. A series of flashbacks from years past run through the film. It is no accident that Trond’s favourite writer is Dickens. Just as in “A Christmas Carol” the ghost forces the character to examine his life, this neighbour, who appears and vanishes like some phantasmagorical spirit from the past, will have the same effect on our protagonist.
